Kathakali

Kathakali is a major form of Indian classical dance. It is a “story play” genre of art, but one distinguished by the elaborately colourful make-up, costumes and face masks that the traditionally male actor-dancers wear. Kathakali is a performing art in the Malayalam-speaking southwestern region of Kerala.

Kathakali classes are open for students from age of five. We provide training in Kathakali using traditional training methods to ensure the essence of this art form is taught in its very purest form. This course is facilitated in three different levels.

Level 1 will focus on developing flexibility, strength and balance of the body, by practising strict and rigourous adavu based on traditional training method.

On Level 2, the student will be prepared to focus on different rhythms and the application of these to develop one’s skills and knowledge around the pure dance aspect of Kathakali. This is when one gets training in Kalasams, Thodayam. Purappadu, Pakuthi Purappadu, Saari, Kummi etc. The second section of training helps a learner to augment his performative understanding by scoping out the different movements in Kathakali in-line with the intrinsic rhythmic patterns set. This section also incorporates the training of nine rasas and the usage of facial muscles to depict various emotions. This is an essential part of training where a student develops himself to an actor.

Level 3 of training is the advanced level of training where one learns different characters and their set patterns of story through ‘Cholliyattam’.

Bharathanatyam, Mohiniyattam, Kuchipudi

Intense training in Bharatanatyam, Mohiniyattom and Kuchipudi are given through unique approach, attempting to create dancers with erudite commentary over techniques of these traditional dance forms. We also ensure that students achieve commendable knowledge in Natyasastra and will constantly introduce Indian literature and poetry to educate students about the context of Indian arts. Students will also be given opportunity to appear for national level examinations (ISTD/OEBL examination boards) during this course.

At this level, students will focus on developing flexibility, strength and balance of the body, by practising strict and rigorous adavus (basic steps) based on traditional training methods. Students will also be trained in abhinaya (acting), thalams (basic rhythmic patterns) and mudras (hand gestural practice) at this level.

This is advanced level of training where students will be taught to perform a full repertoire. This training will also augment students to have an in-depth knowledge on the theoretical aspects of these traditions dance forms by learning key chapters from Natyasastra and other important texts.
